HEAD OF THE CLASS American Women’s Society of Certified Public Accountants presented its Educator of the Year Award to Assistant Professor of Accounting Susan Sorenson. The national award recognizes excellence in teaching in the accounting field at the college level. AWSCPA provides an array of leadership, networking and educational resources and opportunities to its members. OUTSTANDING SCHOLARS Undergraduate student Wendy Leleux and graduate student Glenda Nicholson were awarded the Dr. Patricia Potter Wilson School of Education Outstanding Undergraduate and Graduate Student Scholarships in December. The endowment creating the undergraduate award was established in 1997, followed by the graduate award endowment in 2003, by UHCL School of Education Associate Professor Emeritus and UHCL Distinguished Alumna Patricia Potter Wilson and her husband, Wendell Wilson, a retired captain for Delta Airlines. A GOOD FIT The National Strength and Conditioning Association recognized UHCL’s Fitness and Human Performance program as part of the NSCA Education Recognition Program. Academic programs recognized by the NSCA emphasize anaerobic conditioning and training within the specified curriculum, which must be regionally accredited and must offer at least a baccalaureate degree. Undergraduate and graduate students in the program pursue careers in physical therapy, health promotion, corporate fitness and/or exercise testing, exercise prescription or exercise direction. MAYORAL ADDRESS Houston Mayor Bill White delivered the keynote address to spring 2007 graduates at Reliant Stadium during the UHCL Commencement Ceremony in May. This most recent graduating class of close to 1,000 students increased the total number of UHCL alumni to more than 44,000 and the total number of degrees conferred to almost 47,000.
NEW DEAN OF STUDENTS UHCL welcomed new Dean of Students Anthony Jenkins, formerly associate dean of students at University of North Carolina Wilmington, in January. A native of Washington, D.C., Jenkins received a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminal justice from Fayetteville State University, a master’s in criminology from North Carolina Central University, and a doctorate in higher education and student affairs from Virginia Tech University. During his tenure in higher education, he has researched and presented in the areas of mentoring, high school violence and first-generation students of color. Jenkins reports to Associate Vice President for Student Services Darlene Biggers, who was recently named the 2007 Diamond Honoree by the American College Personnel Association Educational Leadership Foundation for her outstanding and sustained contributions to higher education and to student affairs. HIGH FIVE UHCL was named one of the top five state agencies in 2006 for Historically Underutilized Business spending in the state. Other top agencies include University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas Secretary of State, University of North Texas System Administration, and Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. SPECIAL TRIBUTE In January, UHCL mourned the passing of Vicki Bailey, who worked for the university during 1995-2005. A beloved member of the UHCL family, Bailey first served as administrative secretary in the Office of the President before being promoted to coordinator of community relations in the Office of University Advancement. Her passion for life and dedication to the university touched many in the community, including local attorney and UHCL alumna Becky Reitz, who paid tribute to Bailey in May with the installation of a Space Center Rotary Club bench next to one of the ponds on campus. |
