Autism lectures continue

After a successful start during spring 2010, the Autism Speaker Series will continue with a new roster of speakers for the fall semester. The series’ kick-off lecture is set for Sept. 18. Deborah A.

Pearson, professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and Maria Quintero, assistant deputy director of the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County will present “An Overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders and Current Treatments for Behavioral and Emotional Problems in ASD.” Pearson and Quintero will provide an overview of autism spectrum disorders, including Autistic Disorder, PDD-NOS, and Asperger’s Disorder, along with proposed causes of ASDs and common emotional and behavioral problems seen in children and adolescents with ASDs. They also will discuss current interventions for behavioral and emotional problems associated with ASDs. Specific therapies that will be examined include medication management, psychotherapy, family therapy, complementary and alternative medical treatments, behavioral interventions and social skills training.

Sponsored by Johnson Space Center Federal Credit Union and CHRISTUS St. John Hospital, the free lecture will be held in the Student Services and Classroom Building Lecture Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Lunch will be served. For more information and to RSVP, call 281-283-3437.
