Just six months into the effort, UHCL's 25th anniversary fundraising campaign, "Building Blocks for Partnerships," is more than halfway toward its August 2000 goal of $250,000. As of Oct. 1, approximately $202,000 in funds and commitments have been received. Sterling sponsors, Lockheed-Martin, Boeing Co. and Houston Chronicle, each contributed $25,000 or more. UHCL's 25 Distinguished Alumni made a group donation of more than $25,000 to earn a joint Sterling sponsorship.
"Individual and community response has been overwhelming," says Steve Kelley, UHCL executive director of development. "We kicked off this campaign with an all-out effort aimed at reconnecting with previous donors, alumni and cultivating new community partners."
Contributors sponsoring the alumni association's "Out of this World Weekend on the Bayou," held Oct. 8-9, automatically received a 25th anniversary sponsorship designation. Net funds raised during the annual event provide direct support for the alumni association's scholarship endowment. The Distinguished Alumni's Sterling sponsorship evolved in response to the alumni association's recent installation of a permanent Wall of Honor celebrating the Distinguished Alumni's continuing commitment to UHCL.
"The association is making a special effort to honor its first 25 Distinguished Alumni. The Wall of Honor is also a gift to the university to recognize its 25 years of academic excellence," says Becky Reitz, past president of the alumni association and coordinator of the Wall of Honor.
Other contributors to the "Out of this World Weekend on the Bayou" include United Space Alliance, Barrios Technology, J. Pamela Photography Inc., First USA Bank N.A., and Gay & Reitz, P.C., Attorneys at Law. Joining the Houston Chronicle as 25th anniversary sponsors are the UHCL Development & Advisory Council, the 25th Anniversary Honorary Committee, Texas City Terminal Railway Co., and Lexus of Clear Lake.
"The positive reaction to our campaign has been tremendous, particularly from the corporate community," says Kelley. "We're emphasizing the importance of this fund-raising drive, because it occurs in conjunction with UHCL's 25th anniversary. Contributions made during this time signal a strong vote of confidence in the university and recognition of our value to the surrounding community."
