3.4 NON-TENURE TRACK ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS

Approved by Faculty Senate Executive Committee 5/14/98

1. Appointment Provisions

All non-tenure track academic appointees are subject to all policies and procedures at UHCL. Lecturers, Visiting Professors, Post-Doctoral Fellows, and Visiting Scholars are non-tenure track appointments.

1.1 Lecturer

1.1.1 The primary use of the title identifies a non-tenure track faculty appointment for the sole purpose of full-time instruction. In addition, the title of Lecturer is used to recognize the part-time involvement in instructional duties of a full time employee who also serves the school in a non-instructional role.

1.1.2 Lecturer appointments conform to those criteria applied to regular faculty appointments. Appointments may be for a term of one semester or for an academic year.

1.1.2 Notice of reappointment or non-reappointment will normally be given by April 1 of the appointment year. Lecturers appointed for a semester will be given notice of reappointment or non-reappointment by the fourth month of the term. Lecturers may be terminated for cause.

1.2 Full-Time Instructional Lecturership

The normal teaching load for a full-time lecturer is twelve (12) semester credit hours, but deans may make exceptions for good and sufficient reasons. Other responsibilities for lecturers will be assigned by the dean as appropriate. Performance evaluation will reflect instructional performance and performance in any other assigned duties according to a weighting determined by the dean. Lecturers who will be reappointed for an academic year may be eligible for merit awards in their schools. School by-laws should specify if lecturers are accorded voting rights for school level issues.

1.3 Lectureship with Part-Time Instructional Duties

A full-time employee may also be designated a Lecturer if that employee has part-time instructional duties as a normal part of his or her workload. For this instructional portion of the Lecturerâs appointment, the criteria for regular faculty appointments will apply. Performance evaluation will reflect instructional performance and performance in any other assigned duties according to a weighting determined by the dean. Lecturers who will be reappointed for an academic year may be eligible for merit awards in their schools.

1.4 Visiting Professor

Visiting professorships are temporary and established for a specified period usually for a semester or an academic year. Visiting appointments conform to those criteria and responsibilities applied to regular faculty appointments and may carry whatever rank is appropriate (e.g., visiting associate professor). Instructional time served as a visiting faculty member does not count toward tenure. Such appointments are subject to annual review.

1.5 Post-Doctoral Fellow

The designation of Post-Doctoral Fellow can be conferred upon an individual whose duties normally consist of conducting research within an academic program at UHCL. A Post-Doctoral Fellow is normally appointed for 1-2 years after completion of a terminal degree and typically comes to the university with external funding.

1.6 Visiting Scholar

The designation of Visiting Scholar can be conferred upon an individual who conducts scholarly activity with a faculty member or with an academic program of the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Typically, the Visiting Scholar comes to the University with external funding and with another university or research center affiliation. The person will not receive direct employment compensation from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
