Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

Position Overview

The Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (Provost) serves as the senior administrative and chief academic officer reporting directly to the President.  He is responsible for all academic administration, including academic programs, student services, planning, institutional research, computing, library, enrollment management, and sponsored programs. Each of the deans of the four schools, the three Associate Vice Presidents, the Executive Director of the Environmental Institute of Houston, the Executive Director of the Office of International Initiatives, and the Director of Academic Support and Business Services are his direct reports.  The Provost also serves as the principal contact between administration and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.  In addition, he also manages the annual review process for promotion and tenure as well as reviews and approves all proposals for appointment to tenure-track faculty positions.  He also works with the President and Vice President for Administration and Finance as required to coordinate University and System policies and practices concerning academic affairs.

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Carl A. Stockton joined University of Houston-Clear Lake after serving three years as dean and Houston Endowed Chair for Education in the University of Texas at Brownsville’s School of Education. During his tenure, Dr. Stockton led the school to double its enrollment and added significant programs to its degree offerings while fostering collaborative initiatives among the university’s schools and other educational institutions. To ensure future success for the school and its students, he acquired more than $33 million in external funding. His foresight and leadership also resulted in the university’s first doctoral program.

 

Other administrative roles held by Dr. Stockton include serving as department chair of health and applied human sciences in the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s College of Art and Sciences and as department chair of exercise, sport and health education in Radford University’s College of Education and Human Development.

 

His distinguished career features progressive levels of achievement as an educator, researcher and author, as well as active community involvement. Professional associations include membership in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, American Association for Health Education and American Council on Education.

           

Dr. Stockton holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Health Education from the University of Florida and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Education from the University of Tennessee.
