After you apply to the Computer Science MS program, submit your official General GRE examination (GRE) score (Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing) directly from Educational Testing Service. GMAT is not acceptable as a replacement of GRE. In general, Computer Science MS students should have a combined GRE score of 1000 or higher for the verbal and quantitative sections and a verbal score of at least 350. However, the admission committee considers applicants with lower scores if they have other outstanding credentials.
If you have already earned a master's degree in a related field of study from an accredited university in the U.S., you may request a waiver of the GRE requirement. Submit a written petition to the Associate Dean.
International students should also submit official TOEFL scores (minimum score is 213) and other required documents. Contact an International Student Advisor with International Student Services for details. Admissions will consider waiver of the TOEFL requirement for applicants who hold at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher education.
Submit optional "Letters of Intent," "Letters of Recommendation," or other similar documents directly to the Computer Science Admission Committee for review.

Once you complete your application file, the Office of Admissions will evaluate the transcripts and then forward the entire application package to the advising office of the School of Science and Computer Engineering (SCE).
The School's Advising Office will further review the your transcripts for GPA, transfer hours, core curriculum, and program foundation courses completed. They then will prepare the application package for the admission review. |
The Computer Science Admission Committee then reviews your application package for admission.
The admission committee will consider many factors in a holistic manner to determine acceptance including GPA, GRE scores, grades of any computer science and mathematics courses, undergraduate majors, recommendation letters, and letter of intent.
The evaluation and review typically takes one month after you complete your application file. The Admissions Office will then send you a letter regarding your status. The letter will indicate whether you are accepted into the master's program, offer any committee recommendations, and specify your faculty advisors. While the review committee assigns faculty advisors, they will consider your request for a specific advisor.
To track your application status, log into E-Services. You may also contact the UHCL Office of Admissions (call 281-283-2500 or uhcl_applicants@uhcl.edu) or SCE Advising Office (call 281- 283-3711 or sceadvising@uhcl.edu). Since the Office of Admissions will not notify you when your application file is complete, it is your responsibility to verify that your application file is complete.
The advising and admission pages of the SCE offer additional useful information. Prospective students may also visit the future student pages of the UHCL website for general information about admission, including general admission requirements, admission procedures, and an online application.
