Web Hosting in SCE

Welcome to the sce.uhcl.edu server. Our server is Dell PowerEdge running Windows 2000 Advanced Server Edition using Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 as the Web Server to provide the faculty, staff and students of SCE, web accounts.

Following are the links that provide more information on the SCE Web Accounts usage.
Accounts For Faculty And Staff

Faculty and staff can use their accounts to host personal web pages on the web server. Faculty and staff members need to inform the Webmaster as soon as they join SCE department, so that they can get the accounts. The server provides services such as telnet, ftp, mail and server side scripting. Faculty and staff are currently limited to a disk quota of 100 Mb. Additional disk space will be allocated upon request. Web database connectivity using MS Access and MS SQL server is available upon request.

Accounts For Students

Students can use their accounts to host personal web pages on the web server. The students need to file an application to get a web account. Click here to get an account. Remember the web accounts are limited to SCE students only.
The server provides services such as telnet, ftp, and server side scripting. Students are currently limited to a disk quota of 30 Mb. Additional disk space will be allocated upon request. Web database connectivity using MS Access and MS SQL server is available upon request.

How To Use Your Account

A folder named pages in your account contains your default home page (Please place all your web pages and public access material under this folder). Over the Internet, accounts can be accessed at http://sce.uhcl.edu/username. Over the Intranet (there is a difference!), accounts can be accessed as \\SceWeb\username.

Following is the ordered list of default start pages for the web account. So please make sure that you have one document from this list as your default homepage or your default start page.
  • index.htm
  • index.html
  • index.asp
  • default.asp
  • default.htm
Accessing The Account on the SCE server

 
  • Mapping:

    Our server is connected to the university network, so you can access your account folder while using a Windows machine within the school by this way also.

     

    Steps
    Right click on Network Neighborhood (NT 4.0) or My Network Places (W2K or XP) Icon on the desktop

    Click on Map Network Drive

    In the folder, type \\nasmain\username, or if your mapping from home then type \\sce.cl.uh.edu\username, and in the drive, give any drive letter.

    The server then prompts you for your username and account password.

    Enter the required fields and hit the return key

    Start windows explorer your account will be now mapped to the drive you specified.

    You will now be able to access your account over the network

     
  • FTP:

    The FTP server is mapped to the top-level folder in your account. The following is a short session for the ftp connection to the SCE server:

    Using the Command Prompt:
    C:\>ftp sce.uhcl.edu

    Connected to sce.uhcl.edu

    220 SceWeb Microsoft FTP Service (Version 5.0).

    User (sce.uhcl.edu:(none)): Enter your username

    331 Password required for username

    Password: ***********

    230-Welcome to the sce.uhcl.edu Server

    230 User username logged in.

    ftp:\>

     



     
    FTP can also be done using the Internet Browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) without using any third party software. Its details are as follows.
    Open the Browser

    Type the URL ftp://sce.uhcl.edu and press enter

    A small window will be opened asking for your username and password

    Enter the username and password of your Web Account and press enter

    You will see all your folders listed in the browser

    You can perform all the operations such as insert, delete, copy folders from your local machine to the server.

     
  • TELNET:

    To connect to the telnet server type:
    C:\>telnet sce.uhcl.edu

    Then type in your username and password.

    The telnet server will take you to your home directory where you will be able to see your files.
