Undergraduate Computer Science students can apply for two major scholarships, the UHCL National Science Foundation Scholar Program and the UHCL Texas Scholars in Computer Science Scholarship Program. There are eligibility criteria; students must be United State citizens or permanent resident. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Since there are multiple awards, the chances are excellent that an eligible applicant can earn the scholarship.
The National Science Foundation and the state of Texas set up the two Computer Science scholarship programs with generous grants to UHCL. The scholarship Websites feature more details about the programs.
The university offers many types of scholarships, grants and loans at the school, university, local, state, and federal levels. Each scholarship has different eligibility criteria. Check the UHCL financial aid Website for more information.
Tips for Scholarship Application
The academic advisors of the School of Science and Computer Engineering offer the following advice on applying for scholarships:
Submit letters of recommendation. All letters receive careful consideration, but you should submit as many letters from UHCL faculty as possible. Letters from UHCL faculty members carry more weight than those from non-faculty, especially if you have attended UHCL for several semesters.
Have someone proficient in English grammar read your essay. An essay edited for grammar and spelling will score higher than an unedited essay.
If necessary, include a copy of your "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) forms. Review committees will deny you further consideration if they require FAFSA and you lack these forms. Be sure to check whether a particular scholarship requires FAFSA.
Get involved in the UHCL community. Participating in SGA, volunteering to serve on event organizing committees, and joining a student organization merit favorable consideration. List your extracurricular activities separately, and mention those activities in your scholarship essay.
Familiarize yourself with the requirements of all of the scholarships you are applying for, and apply for all the scholarships for which you are eligible.
Finally, check your applications carefully to verify they are complete. Incomplete applications are the first ones denied further consideration.
