The field of statistics deals with “the science of decision-making in the face of uncertainty.” Since the world is becoming more quantitative, industries and government now rely upon data analysis and statistically derived inference for their planning and developing policies. Combined with mathematics and computing skills, statistics has a broad application to virtually every professional field. Statisticians use their quantitative abilities, statistical knowledge, and communication skills to solve many complex real-world problems.

Career Opportunities

Nearly every profession uses statistical methodology to conduct research and make important decisions. Research and development divisions of private and public concerns demand statistical analysis as a critical part of their day-to-day efforts. Government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, medical institutes, financial institutions, industrial firms, and energy companies employ statisticians to collect and analyze their data. As a result, they prize professional statisticians trained in the theory and application of statistical methodology. Many firms offer statistics graduates challenging, rewarding careers with excellent salaries and benefits.
