Alfred R. Neumann Library
Alfred R. Neumann Library
The Alfred R. Neumann Library, located on the second and third floors of the Bayou Building, offers extensive support to Computer Science and Computer Information Systems students.
Professional librarians staff the reference desk. They guide students in using the online catalog, print and electronic resources, general references, and specialized subject matter. They offer classes in database searching each semester. They also schedule appointments with individual students to guide them in their research. The reference staff publishes a variety of instruction guides, called Bibliotips, on various topics ranging from "Keys to Finding What You Need," and "Locating Full Text," to detailed instructions for searching specific databases such as ACM Digital Library, LEXIS-NEXIS Academic, and Education Full-Text.

The following resources are especially useful to CS & CIS students.

  • Applied Science Full-Text (1983–present) features online indexing to over 560 core English-language scientific and technical publications, many serving the computing field. Ninety-eight journals are full-text.
  • ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Digital Library (1985–present) features citations, selected abstracts and reviews, and over 69,000 full-text and full-image articles for all ACM journals, magazines, conference proceedings, and some ACM co-sponsored publications on topics in computer science and related fields. It also includes Table of Contents for journals and magazines (1954–present) and conference proceedings (1986–present).
  • NetLibrary hosts over 30,000 scholarly, reference, and professional e-books. A respectable subset is in the computing field. For example, you can search the subject of Java or books published by O'Reilly press.
  • Ebsco furnishes direct-print subscriptions for the School of Science and Computer Engineering. These subscriptions cost slightly above $100,000. Most of these periodicals are computer journals.
  • The library subscribes to the IEEE Computer Society Library Subscription Plan electronic (CSLSPe) database. This database offers full-text Internet access to IEEE Computer Society periodicals and conference proceedings, including 23 online IEEE Computer Society journals and magazines (back filed to 1988) and more than 1,700 conference proceedings titles (back filed to 1995).
  • Safari Books Online technical books features many current technical works in computer science.

The library is a member of many consortia. It also participates in the TexShare card program, through which students borrow materials directly from other colleges and universities. Students can also request books and papers through online interlibrary loan forms. Ask about these opportunities at the library reference desk, call 281-283-3910, or e-mail library@uhcl.edu.
