Dr. Bazlur Rashid is looking for undergraduate students to work in his research projects. For those of you who are considering a career in biological science, this is the best way to discover what it is like to be involved in research. A student can get class credits at the same time ranging from 1 to 3 hours (no exams!).

Contact Dr. Rashid if you have taken Molecular Biology/Genetics lecture and laboratory courses already.
Recently, Dr. Rashid has obtained a NIH/ARRA grant for his project "New human inducible nitric oxide binding proteins: possible role in infertility".

Report on the PreHealth Professions Conference organized by the UHCL Biology Club
The members of the panel were (from left to right in the picture) Jeremy Branncock and Richard Funk, both second year dental students at UT Houston Dental School, Dr. Richard Jahan-Tigh (BS Environmental Science 1998, MS Environmental Science 2002 from UHCL) who is a 1st year resident in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Dermatology at UT Houston Health Science Center, Aileen Ebadat is a 4th year med student at UTMB (BS Biology from UHCL 2004), Marci Contreras (BS Biology 2005 from UHCL), PA with Clear Lake Neurology, and Anu Rao, PA with the San Jacinto Medical Group.
As the faculty advisor for the UHCL Biology Club I want to let you know about the success of the Prehealth Professions Conference that the club organized and held on the evening of April 14th of this year in the Garden Room. A small fee of $3 for UHCL non-club members, $5 for non-UHCL attendees that RSVPed ahead of time, and $10 for non-RSVP attendees.

The total attendance at the conference was 35, with 24 being members of the UHCL Biology Club, 9 from San Jac. Community Colleges, and 2 from College of the Mainland. The conference consisted of a panel of 6 members, most recent UHCL alumni, that have gone on to med school, dent school, and Physician Assistant school, and are in the early stages of their careers.
In addition to the panel, refreshments and snacks were provided. Each panel member gave a brief introduction on their background and then the conference was opened up for questions to the panel. The Q&A went on nonstop for about 2 hours! It was gratifying to hear the panelists talk about how much they appreciated the education they received at UHCL, and how what they had learned in their biology classes had contributed to their success in professional school.
With the success of this first conference, the club is planning to organize another conference next spring. Please pass along this information to students that you know who might be interested in participating in next year's conference.
Thank you for your support
