Welcome to the Chemistry Program of the University of Houston at Clear Lake (UHCL)
Welcome to the Chemistry Program at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. The UHCL Chemistry Program has complete accreditation by the American Chemical Society. It has ranked in the top 20% nationwide with respect to the number of graduates in a recent survey compiled by the American Chemistry Society.
The undergraduates enrolled in our chemistry program will learn in a small-class environment from an accessible faculty, who has wide-ranging experience in both teaching and research. Chemistry students are provided the opportunities for the hands-on training on many modern instruments widely used in both academia and industry, such as the superconducting NMR, HPLC, GC/MS, FT-IR, and Diode-Array spectrophotometers. Furthermore, students with outstanding GPA will be awarded a prestigious scholarship, the largest one at UHCL campus.
Students seeking a degree of Bachelor of Science in chemistry can earn an ACS certification, a distinction many employers demand. In addition, students are also afforded the opportunity to carry out fundamental research with a chemistry faculty, who has always been extremely active in scientific research, as evidenced by the over 300 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals authored by our chemistry faculty members. Many of these articles include UHCL students as co-authors.
The research area that our current chemistry faculty conduct include:
The oretical and experimental work in molecular modeling of complex biological molecules,
Novel metal-organic polymers with industrial applications,
Material science,
Synthesis of novel anti-cancer and anti-AIDS therapeutic agents,
Organometallic and organic synthesis for biomedical applications,
Enzymatic control of plant growth, and
Chemical bioremediation in environmental chemistry.
The University of Houston-Clear Lake, a comprehensive upper-level institution, thrives in a climate of cutting-edge scientific research. The campus is nested next to the Johnson Space Center, in close proximity to the Bayport chemistry industries. The UHCL Chemistry Program tailors its degree plans to meet the needs of working students. We offer low in-state tuition, year-round enrollment, and convenient scheduling. Our undergraduate programs prepare students for industry, education or graduate study.
Graduate students may pursue a thesis or extended coursework. The thesis program prepares students for doctoral study or private-sector research and development. Extended coursework helps those currently employed expand their expertise and advance their careers. A complete course listing is available online at http://www.uhcl.edu/catalog.
