Teaching Assistant

The chemistry department hires a certain number of graduate students to serve as teaching assistants (TA) of chemistry courses. The main duty of the TA is to assist the instructor to teach the lab courses and grade homework.

Only enrolled master students are eligible for teaching assistant position. International students working as TA will be considered as instate students. For those students who are interested in a TA position, should fill the TA application form at the Associate Dean’s office. Before the beginning of each semester, a faculty member will screen the applicants and choose the qualified one as his/her TA, then the selected student will be notified by school.

To apply, complete and return the TA application form to the Associate Dean's office, located in Bayou 3611. Make sure that you have satisfied all the eligibility requirements. Make sure that the email in the form is a working one. If you are interested to serve as a TA of a specific course, you may want to introduce yourself to the instructor to find out more about the course.

If you are chosen for TA position, the following steps must be taken:

Document Your Eligibility to Work Prior to Start the Work. You will NOT be paid for any work done prior to completing your INS I-9 documentation.
Present driver's license and social security card or passport at the Office of Human Resources, Bayou Room 1111. Complete the INS Form I-9.
All employees must document as required by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

Upon completion of necessary paperwork, you may request information about insurance benefits that are available to you based on your student employment.

There will be an orientation for TA at the beginning of every long semester and all TA must attend. Note that students need to have an approved Candidate Plan of Studies (CPS) to be hired as a TA.
