General Questions
1. What is the UHCL Annual Conference?
This Student Conference is committed to providing students across all disciplines an affordable forum in which to present original research and creative arts projects. In addition, relevant workshops and lectures are provided. This conference is a great place to receive and comments from colleagues and to plan future collaborations with fellow practitioners. Many students who present at the meeting have noted that senior researchers at their sessions express support and enthusiasm for their research and creative works.
2. Who can participate?
Undergraduate and graduate students from any college or university are welcome to participate. Faculty sponsors may be co-authors but may not be presenters or first authors.
3. Why should I participate?
There are many reasons to participate in the student conference, including the opportunity to demonstrate your achievements in a forum outside of your regular classroom. You will be called upon to give presentations throughout your career. This is an opportunity to practice and receive constructive feedback. The online publication of your abstract and official commendation are valuable additions to your Curriculum Vitae.
4. When is the conference?
Wednesday, April 20 - Friday, April 22, 2011. There are both day and evening sessions.
5. What type of projects can be submitted?
An individual student or group can submit original scholarly work(s) including:
- a paper written for class or presented in a class
- the outcome of an independent research project
- creative writings, art creations, dramatic readings, or musical compositions
6. What should I wear?
Business casual attire is preferred.
Presentation Questions
1. What are the formats for presentations?
There are three most frequently used formats for presentations:
- Poster Presentation
- Oral Presentation (Literary recitations, performing art, and visual presentations are also included.)
- Juried Art Display
2. How can I prepare the presentations?
Please reference the main navigation for the Student Conference and select the presentation style of interest.
3. How much space will I have for my poster?
The panel available for your poster are 60’’ wide and 84’’ long.
4. Where I can print my posters?
The UHCL Copy Center has the capability of printing your full color poster, which means you can have a poster presentation printed. You are invited to stop in and see a sample and ask for details. The UHCL Copy Center is on the 2nd floor of the Bayou Building right across from the Library.

5. How much time do I have for my oral presentation?
You will be provided a total of 15 minutes for your oral presentation, including time for questions and discussion.
6. Who are the evaluators?
The evaluators are faculty members from the UHCL and other educational and professional institutions.
7. What are the evaluators looking for?
The evaluators consider the following:
- the subject of the presentation
- the quality of its design
- the strength of the introduction
- the originality of thought
- well-developed ideas
- complex analysis
- the ability to integrate knowledge within the work
- the awareness of audience
- the implications of conclusions
8. Are there any “prizes” given for outstanding projects?
Special commendations are typically awarded to the top 25-30% of posters and oral presentations. This will constitute a valuable item for the presenter’s Curriculum Vitae (CV).
Housing & Traveling Questions
1. To which airport do I fly?
You should fly to Houston-Hobby Airport, because it is closest to the conference site, but you can also arrive at Houston-Bush International Airport which is farther from the conference site. We do not provide students with transportation to and from the airport for this conference. You can take the SuperShuttle to the hotel from Hobby Airport, or get a taxi.
2. How will I get to and from the hotel and the conference?
We do not provide students with transportation to and from the hotel for this conference. There may a van operated by hotel to and from conference are available, or you can get a taxi. The Candlewood Suites are within walking distance.
