2007 Annual Student Leadership Conference

BOTTOMS UP! A Complete & Practical Guide to a New Texas Law
Presenters: : Barry S. McKinney, Director of Student Activities, University of Texas, San Antonio and Ms. Kelsey Bratcher, Assistant Director of Risk Education, Alcohol and Drug Programs, University of Texas, San Antonio
Advisor/Staff Track
Location: Bayou Building Room TBA

This interactive session will help participants plan events and develop strategies to assist with the compliance of the new state law. As its title suggests, we will get to the bottom of most of the issues addressed. Video clips will be used to illustrate the topic. Participates should leave knowing the elements of the state law, how to plan several events and activities that comply with the law, and how to assess your activities using a learning outcomes model. We are not attorneys so this is a practical approach to the law.

About the Presenters: Barry S. McKinney is the Director of Student Activities at the University of Texas at San Antonio and he is the SGA Workshop Coordinator. As Director, Barry has overall responsibility for the Student Activities Office, including Student Organizations, Greek Life, Cultural Programming, Risk Education, Alcohol and Drug Programming, Campus Activities Board, and Student Government. Barry also has experience in the area of residence life and he knows large and small campuses. Barry served his international fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, as an Educational Leadership Consultant. Barry received his Master of Science degree in educational administration at Texas A&M University in the Student Affair Administration in Higher Education (SAAHE) program. Barry also has his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, where he minored in counseling and human resources. Currently, Barry is a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership at Texas A&M – Kingsville.

Ms. Kelsey Bratcher is the Assistant Director of Risk Education, Alcohol and Drug Programs at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She works with student organizations and help them risk management and alcohol/drug awareness programs. She currently serves as the Texas State Coordinator with the BACCHUS Network. She is the former Assistant Director of the Jack B. Kelley Student Center at West Texas A&M University. Kelsey received her bachelor’s degree in mass communications broadcast and her master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies both at West Texas A&M University.



Beyond the Bake Sale: Move Your Fundraising Efforts to the Next Level
Presenters: Kim Herhold, Senior Coordinator of the Annual Fund, University of Houston – Clear Lake

Is your organization strapped for cash and needs to explore new ways to raise money? This session will give you new ideas for fundraising as well as provide tips on how to build relationships with potential donors, approach donors, where to find prospective donors and how to work with your university’s development office.

About the Presenter: Kim Herhold is the Senior Coordinator of the Annual Fund at the University of Houston – Clear Lake, and she enjoys working with student organizations and their fundraising efforts. She is a UHCL alumnus, receiving her BS in Healthcare Administration (1997) and her MBA in 2000. While a student at UHCL, Kim was active in various student organizations as well as the Student Government Association’s Executive Council. During her term in SGA, her team was able to raise $5000 to endow a scholarship for student leaders. While away from work, Kim enjoys catching basketball games, cooking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.



From Good to GREAT: Taking Your Organization to the Next Level
Presenter: Mr. Jackie C. Thomas, Jr., Coordinator of Freshman Year Residential Experience (FYRE) program, University of Houston (UH).

Come and learn the steps to achieving organizational GREATNESS! Join the presenter in an interactive presentation that will explain what it takes to transform your organization from Good to Great. Organizational leadership, quality membership, recruitment, and programming are just a few of the topics that will be covered. Program participants will share opinions, experiences, and resources from their respective organizations. Its time to upgrade!

About the Presenter: Mr. Jackie C. Thomas, Jr., currently works at the University of Houston (UH) as the Coordinator of Freshman Year Residential Experience (FYRE) program. As part of the FYRE Program, 250 students inhabit a living-learning environment specifically designed to meet the needs of first year students. Participants have increased access to faculty and staff, programs relating to transitions issues, involvement in community service, and a peer mentor program. Before returning to UH, Jackie worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Student Activities Center at the Florida State University (FSU). While at FSU, he oversaw the Event Management and Registration Process for all student organizations and also co-advised Union Productions, FSU’s Student Programming Board. Jackie is very passionate about student leadership, student development, and student retention. He received his B.S. in Consumer Science and Merchandising from the University of Houston in 2004, and his M.S. in Higher Education from The Florida State University in 2006.
