Help ABNC Keep a Sweet Tradition Alive – The Art of Syrup Making

Location: Armand Bayou Nature Center

We have been raising cane at the Nature Center. Sugar cane, that is. On January 24, 2009, we will be squeezing the sugar using an old fashioned cane press and then simmering in an equally old fashioned cooker to make syrup. ABNC is looking for volunteers to learn the art of syrup making and ensure this ABNC tradition is not lost. Volunteers will be expected to play a critical role in quality control – tasting the syrup to ensure it has just the right amount of sweetness. Volunteers will also be able to show off their syrup skills at the Center’s annual Martyn Farm Fall Festival.
Call ABNC if you are interested in keeping the art and tradition of syrup making alive.

Super Bowl of Caring – February 1, 2009
www.souperbowl.org/cities.php?cityID+houstonTX

We need a lot of help – in fact, over 3,000 volunteers!
Each year, the Houston Food Bank partners with Souper Bowl of Caring as part of an effort to fight hunger in Houston. Utilizing Super Bowl weekend on February 1 to mobilize youth and adults to fight hunger and poverty in their communities, Souper Bowl of Caring helped the Houston Food Bank raise $1.8 million in cash and cans in 2007 alone!

Volunteers are needed to help out at local grocery stores (HEB, Randalls, Krogers) throughout Houston during Super Bowl weekend. It’s simple, fun and lasts only for a few hours! We are asking groups, individuals and corporations to help out again this year to make an even greater impact!
