Servant Leader Scholar Program The Servant Leader Scholar Program (SLSP) is sponsored by the Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement (SLICE) program, housed in the Student Life Office. The SLSP recognizes students who complete service hours and participate in leadership development during their matriculation at the UHCL.
The definition of a Servant Leader is: "The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead… The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?" (Robert K. Greenleaf, The Servant as Leader, 1970).
The SLSP encourages UHCL students to engage in activities that help them develop their servant leadership skills. SLICE provides leadership development training through a wide variety of venues, including:
- Leadership Workshop Series(2-hour workshops offered during Fall & Spring)
- Leadership Retreats
- Annual Student Leadership Conference
- Live Speaker Videoconferences (provided by National Society of Leadership and Success - NSLS)
- Leadership Training Day (3 hour workshop – NSLS)
Students can earn service hours simply by volunteering on-campus and in the community and documenting their hours served with SLICE, which provides students with opportunities to volunteer through:
- Day of Service (Spring)
- Online clearinghouse of volunteer opportunities in the Houston-Galveston communities
- Assistance with finding opportunities through referrals
- Bi-weekly email blasts announcing upcoming volunteer opportunities
SLSP OrientationsDid we tell you that after completing the requirements for the SLSP, students can receive the bronze, silver or gold service pin, graduation cords, certificate, and a record of participation that can be included in their portfolio? This Orientation will go over how to participate in the program and provide an overview of opportunities at UHCL for getting involved in leadership and service programs. Schedule
