Fundraising - Do's and Don'ts
DO
- "Friendraise" as well as Fundraise.
- Double work - - sell t-shirts at a bake sale.
- Donate supplies/services as much as you can.
- Keep records of everything you do.
- Make the most of every opportunity, big or small.
- Have a goal.
- Your homework; research your ask and know your request.
- Get groups together before and after the event to applaud successes.
- Use thoughtful planning…too many requests for too many programs illustrates impulsiveness.
- Think positively.
- Utilize multiple approaches to fundraising.
- Spend as little time as possible on fundraiser, they can bog down a group.
- Give donors something tangible for their donation.
- Make successful fundraisers traditional.
- Keep track of those that have supported you in the past.
- Watch for opportunities to build on other’s efforts.
- Energetic, creative and enthusiastic.
DON’T
- Rely totally on dues.
- Allow funding raising to disrupt the regular business of programs of the organization.
- Ask for a fixed price when a donation will do.
- Assume all pledges will pay – you need to remind them.
- Expect too much from members – you should be having fun.
- Focus on cash and in kind/operational support such as phone usage, typing, etc. which will help minimize expenses.
- Have a fundraiser on impulse, plan carefully.
