Personal Motivation

True North - Direction to Personal Motivation

Are you using your Compass….Daily?

To be successful in the short term (daily life) and the long term (future) we must create and follow our personal compass. That is, adhere motivations and reasons that drive your goals. Everything that you do daily, no matter how small or large, should move you closer to your goal. Just as if you were out on the open seas, you must continue to look at your compass to be sure you are still on track.

To help create your personal compass, think about these questions:

  • What one thing could you do each day, that you already are not doing, that would make a positive difference in your personal life?
  • What one thing could you do each day, that you already are not doing, that would make a positive difference in your professional life?
  • How do you want to be remembered at your funeral?

* To keep following your compass, try to do the following on a daily basis:

Be Proactive…in attitude and daily tasks

What can you do today that will prepare you for the unexpected tomorrow, or help you get closer to your end goal(s).

Put First things First….tend to the important daily issues

Identify the roles that mean most to you (parent/spouse/student/sister/volunteer/etc.) and tend to those responsibilities first. Thus priorities become meaningful and rewarding and other responsibilities become less stressful and more manageable.

Begin with the End in Mind

Every day should be an integral part of your mission…make it count.

Be holistically healthy…sharpen your saw

Be sure to attend to your physical and mental needs. Take care of yourself.

* Soruce: adapted from Dr. Steven Covey’s book, "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People".
