Director of Student Relations

Greetings! I have been working at colleges and universities since 1996, and I have been in the School of Education at UHCL since 2003. My own college experience was amazing thanks to all of the wonderful, caring people at Saint Francis College who helped me along with way. My experience was so great that I decided that I wanted to become someone whose job is to help college students succeed.

My goal every day is to help our students meet their academic and career goals. My father has spent his professional life as a teacher and administrator, so education has always been a part of my life on a very personal level. I am committed not only to helping students succeed, but also to doing my part to ensure that UHCL continues to prepare high quality teachers and other education professionals. If I can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I have been a part of the UHCL community since 2001. It has been my privilege to have spent all of that time in the School of Education. Being an academic advisor has afforded me the opportunity to meet many different people and make a contribution to individual educational journeys. During my tenure, I completed a Master’s Degree in Counseling, giving me added insight into the UHCL student experience.

I am married with 2 children and we live here in the Bay Area. It is important to me to give back to the community that has been my life-long home. I look forward to each new semester and welcoming a new group of people intent on changing their lives and improving our society through education.

Before my days at Austin High School’s Magnet Program for Teaching Professions, I knew I wanted to be in education. From having great grandparents who were Texas educators to my mother lighting that college fire underneath me in Kindergarten, it has always been stressed in our family.

I also knew I wanted to move away, something else my mother advocated. I decided on Dillard University after an impressive visit to the campus and encounters with very personable recruiters. It was one of the best decisions of my life! The personal and academic support I received led me to research internships at Michigan State University and doctoral studies at Emory University. My involvement at Dillard included voluntary recruiting for the university and steered me toward community programs that helped prepare students for college in both New Orleans and Atlanta.

Upon deciding I wanted my time in education to be more practical, I returned to Houston to teach high school in my home district. My passion was still helping my students prepare for college. God led me to fashion that passion, my volunteer experience, and teaching skills into a career as an academic advisor at UHCL, a school my mother attended in the 1970s and a place I’ve wanted to work for years. It has been a blessing ever since.

I joined the advising team in November 2006. Prior to advising, I was an elementary teacher for eight years. My educational background is exclusive to the field of education and the University of Houston system. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston. I went on to earn both a Master of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction and principal certification from UHCL. I am currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership here at UHCL. I endeavor to use my experience as a teacher and a student to assist current and prospective UHCL students in achieving their academic and career goals.

Howdy! My name is Carmen Conley and I'm a native of El Paso, TX. I am extremely grateful to be the first in my family to attend college and graduated in 2007 from Texas A&M University with a B.A. in Psychology. Since graduation, I've made my home in Houston for the past 2 years. While I'm not a big fan of the weather and the Houston traffic, I have grown to love the people and the mix of cultures that I have discovered within the community. I love meeting new people, so please feel free to stop by if you need any help or if you just want to chit-chat!

Collaborative Coordinator/Academic Advisor

I am a first generation college student who hails from the state famous for Indy races and corn—Indiana. I attended Ball State University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism/Public Relations. Because of my great experience with higher education, I went on to pursue my Master’s in College Student Personnel at Bowling Green State University. My time spent in service-learning, student organization programming, first-year experience courses, and orientation led me to pursue a position as an academic advisor and STEP Collaborative Program Coordinator at UHCL. If I have not met you already, please feel free to stop by! I look forward to meeting and helping advise you throughout your time at UHCL.

Coordinator of State Assessments/Academic Advisor

I began teaching elementary school in Spring Branch ISD after graduating from The University of Texas at Austin. During my years of teaching I earned a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction with a Reading Specialist certification. I then became a stay-at-home mom for 15 years while my sons were growing up, but during that time I managed to keep my hand in education by substitute teaching and serving in several PTA positions. When it was time to go back to working full time, the idea of working at UHCL was very attractive to me—especially in the School of Education. Being an academic advisor and the state assessments coordinator means I get to interact with students every day, and I really enjoy that. Stop by or call anytime you have questions or concerns.
