UHCL SoE GATER2 Program

What is GATER2?
GATER2 stands for the Galveston Area Teacher Education Recruitment and Retention program. In an effort to bring bright, dedicated students into the world of teaching and into the area public schools, GATER2 is a collaboration of Galveston I.S.D., Galveston College and University of Houston-Clear Lake. These three Gulf Coast institutions are working together to provide a step-by-step program of community college preparation, university graduation, and school district experience, to train future teachers for careers in education in the Galveston area.

GATER2 students begin by taking course work at Galveston College and transferring to UHCL to take junior and senior level courses. While students attend college at both campuses, Galveston I.S.D. will provide GATER2 students with opportunities for employment and experiential learning. Internships and field experiences will be available in the Galveston area for interested students. Galveston I.S.D. is always looking for qualified, dedicated teachers, and your involvement in this program can be the first step in finding a teaching job in the Galveston area.

What else does GATER2 offer?
As a student in the GATER2 program, you will be provided with a variety of special services, including advising assistance, employment opportunities, career counseling, scholarship opportunities, and other programs for your journey to become a teacher a positive, rewarding and successful experience. Each year, students are encouraged to apply for scholarships, awarded specifically to Galveston area teacher education students.

As new programs are developed, services for GATER2 students continue to grow. We at Galveston I.S.D., Galveston College and University of Houston-Clear Lake are committed to providing Galveston area students with every opportunity to make the dream of becoming a teacher a reality.
