State Assessments for Educator Certification
Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT) Texas Examinations for Master Teachers (TExMaT)
The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) issues educator certificates only to candidates who make a passing score on the appropriate exam(s).
To be eligible to register for any of the state assessments, the candidate must:
- Have an approved degree plan, certification plan, or deficiency plan signed and on file in the School of Education.
- Be formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program (if seeking initial teaching certification).
- Be enrolled in or have completed TCED 4010 or 4012.
When these criteria have been met, the candidate should:
- Log in to his/her SBEC online account at www.sbec.state.tx.us to
- Retrieve TEA ID#.
- Verify that e-mail address and other personal information is correct.
- Log in to www.texes.ets.org to register for the desired exam(s).
If the candidate has any problems registering:
- Contact Educational Testing Services (ETS) at 1-866-902-5922;

- E-mail UHCL at stateassessments@uhcl.edu.
Practice Tests
Practice TExES exams are given periodically throughout the year at UHCL. See Schedule for Practice State Assessments for specific dates.
Study Guides
Preparation manuals (study guides) designed for each test include sample questions, strategies for answering test questions, and a list of competencies that will be tested. They may be printed for free by registering online at the ETS website listed above.
