Internship I TCED 4738

Pre-service Internship I

All students must meet the following requirements for admission to Pre-service Internship I:

  • Formal admission to Teacher Education Program.
  • Verification of written and spoken proficiency in English. Evidence of successful completion of a speech and composition course (if the course requires public speaking in English) will satisfy this requirement.
  • Pedagogy courses and LLLS 5131/LLLS 4434 must be satisfactorily completed prior to or taken concurrently with Pre-service Internship I. Students are not allowed to take more than two courses which include field experience concurrently with Internship I. Courses offered before 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays may not be taken during Internship I, as they may interfere with Internship I course requirements.
  • For those certifications requiring TCED 4233, successful completion of MATH 3032 is a prerequisite. For those certifications requiring TCED 4333, successful completion of MATH 3037 is a prerequisite, unless otherwise noted in the catalog. See catalog prerequisites for all pedagogy courses.
  • Applications for Pre-service Internship I must be received in the CPDT (B1231-4) before the close of business on March 1 for fall and October 1 for spring. Mailed applications must be postmarked by September 26 for spring and February 24 for fall. If the application deadline falls on a weekend or a university holiday, applications will be accepted before the close of business on the following working day. Faxes and late applications will not be accepted.
  • Upon acceptance into TCED 4738, a student will be placed on the district's substitute list. As required by Texas Senate Bill 9, the district will conduct a criminal background check on each student. In order for the criminal background check to be conducted, each student will be required to provide all required documentation. Part of the documentation will require that each student provide his/her social security number and his/her driver's license number. If a student does not have a driver's license number, the state identification number must be provided.

Admission to Pre-service Internship I is contingent upon eligibility for entering Pre-service Internship II the following consecutive long semester. Students will be informed of their public school internship assignment before Pre-service Internship I begins.

During Internship I

During Internship I, the interns will spend all day each Wednesday of the public school semester in a supervised field experience at one of the designated Professional School campuses. (NOTE: Courses offered at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays may not be taken during Internship I, as they may interfere with Internship I’s course requirements.) The intern will be under the supervision of an Internship Team consisting of: Center for Professional Development of Teachers, the PDS personnel, the university supervisor, district supervisor, and mentor teacher with the corporation of the campus principal. The Internship Team will serve as the intern’s teacher, supervisor, and mentor throughout the two semesters of internship. The University Supervisor is teacher of record for this course. This experience will consist of, but not limited to:

  • Internship I Orientation: this meeting is held in May or December the semester before entering Internship I at UHCL. The meeting will be held during the week after finals and is a required meeting. Failure to attend may result in the intern being withdrawn from Internship I.
  • Adhere to required attendance requirements: follow the mentor teacher’s daily and weekly schedule
  • Meet requirements to be eligible for placement on the assigned district’s substitute list
  • Become familiar with and adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators, UHCL Student Code Conduct
  • Demonstrate the professional attributes and dispositions stated in the SOE Professional Attributes and SOE Disposition Policy
  • Become familiar and adhere to school and district protocol, rules and policies
  • Attend in-services, faculty meetings, team meetings and seminars both at PDS and UHCL, as scheduled
  • Experience a variety of classroom settings through required observations
  • Lesson planning and implement lesson plans with assigned classroom students
  • Small group or individual tutoring
  • Technology training
  • Classroom Management training and implementation
  • Develop an e-portfolio based on the School of Education’s Initial Certification Standards
Suggestions for Success in Internship I from former Internship I candidates:
  1. Take a light course schedule
  2. Calm down and chill out, don’t panic. The e-portfolio is not a caustic deadly agent. You will survive.
  3. Collaborate
  4. Be active in the classroom. Don’t sit in the back of the class and “veg” out.
  5. Attend the first day of school. You will need to see rules and procedures being taught.
  6. Establish with the students that you are a teacher.
  7. Travel with your students to music, P.E., library --- you will see another aspect of them.
  8. Be realistic about your expectations in the classroom.
  9. Never throw away or delete anything (especially your stuff from your methods classes)
