APPLICATION PROCESS
Application
  • Must complete the Alternative Certification Program Application.
  • Applications must be submitted in person. ($60.00 Application Fee)
  • Applications are available at the Informational Meetings or from an Academic Advisor
  • Candidates must meet eligibility requirements for each year that they are in the program. Annual audits are conducted to determine continued eligibility.
Due Date
  • Applications for fall 2009 internship entry deadline date is July 10, 2009 for Bilingual Certifications by the Center for Professional Development of Teachers (CPDT) office, Bayou 1231-4. Late applications are NOT accepted.
Informational Meetings
  • Informational Meetings are scheduled during the fall and spring semesters. As meetings are scheduled, dates and times will be available on the CPDT bulletin board. The Informational Meetings for Fall 2009 internship entry are:
    • Thurs. Jan. 15, 2009 at 5:30-6:30 pm
    • Sat. Feb. 22, 2009 10-11
    • Thurs. March 26, 2009 5:30-6:30 PM
    • Sat. April 25, 2008 10-11 AM
    • Thurs. May 21, 2009 5:30-6:30 PM
    • Sat. June 13, 2009 10-11 AM

State Assessment
  • Must pass the TExES content area state assessment in the appropriate level and certification being sought before entry into the ACP Internship. If seeking certification in Bilingual, must also pass the TOPT.
Enrollment
  • Must be admitted to UHCL by the Office of Admissions before the Alternative Certification Program application deadline in order for SOE Office of Academic Advising to obtain transcripts from the Office of Admissions to calculate GPA.
  • Apply as seeking either a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification or seeking a master's degree and a Graduate Teacher Certification.
GPA
  • Must have at least a 2.500 or greater overall Grade Point Average (GPA) from an accredited university. A 2.500 GPA for the last 60 hours of coursework will be accepted; the last 60 hours chronologically include the full semester in which the 60th hour appears.
Fees (All fees are non-refundable.)
  • $60 Application Fee
  • $120.00 TExES Fees for each state assessment to be taken.
  • Application fees are valid for 12 months from date of application. There is a $45 fee for changing certification once the application is submitted.
Teaching Job
  • Must have a signed contract or “Intent to Hire” letter or full-time Teacher of Record employment in an approved teaching field with a UHCL School of Education member school district.

Deadline for Fall 2009 hire date is Sept. 8, 2009. The experience must match the level and area of certification program currently offered by UHCL and being sought by the applicant. Upon receiving an “Intent to Hire” letter from a district, bring a copy of the letter to the CPDT office (Bayou 1231-4) for final admission to the Alternative Certification Internship Program. The teaching position for the internship CANNOT include sponsorship of extra curricular activities (e.g. coaching. cheerleading, theater) or teaching content outside of the teaching specialization. The position must be at one of UHCL’s School of Education member districts. These include:

Alvin, Angleton, Brazosport, Channelview, Clear Creek, Columbia-Brazoria, Danbury, Deer Park, Dickinson, Friendswood , Galena Park, Galveston, Goose Creek, Hitchcock, Houston, La Marque, La Porte, Pasadena, Pearland, Santa Fe, Sheldon, Texas City

  • Acceptance Letter – Must receive a Letter of Acceptance confirming you have met the above requirements for entry into the UHCL Alternative Certification Program. This letter will be sent to you by the CPDT.
