In Curriculum and Instruction

This graduate plan is designed for teachers who are striving to become curriculum and instructional leaders. Students in this program may select an area of concentration from the elementary grades, middle school, secondary, or a specific content area. Students will explore new developments in education, instruction and curriculum and will work with School of Education faculty toward building their own individual advanced levels of professional expertise.

This degree consists of a minimum of 36 hours and although this program is designed for highly qualified practicing classroom teachers, it also provides opportunity for leadership development in preparation for roles as a curriculum development specialist, department or grade level chair, team leader or lead teacher, educational consultant and mentor teacher.

The graduate plan in Curriculum and Instruction is distinguished from undergraduate study in its depth of subject matter and its more concentrated concern on professional problems and current educational trends. At the master's degree level, the focus is on the student's professional growth and development and may lead to advanced certification in certain areas.

Curriculum and Instruction MS

The graduate plan in Curriculum and Instruction leads to the master of science degree. This degree consists of a minimum of 36 semester hours and is designed for practicing teachers whose career plans remain focused on classroom instruction.

Professional Education Core (12 hours):
EDUC 6032 EDUC 6033 SILC 6030 TCED 6031/INST 6031 
Curriculum and Instruction Core (6 hours):
TCED 5030 TCED 5031    
12 hours from one area of specialization as follows:
  1. Content Field (Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, etc.)
  2. Special Education
  3. Gifted and Talented Education
  4. Graduate Certificate in Teacher Leadership
  5. Other specializations as Approved by Faculty Advisor.

Master's Degree Options (6 hours) 1,2 :

Option 1: EDUC 6839 or Option 2: EDUC 6939

1 Candidates pursuing the MS in Curriculum and Instruction must participate in a structured interview with the TCED Faculty Interview Committee prior to enrollment in either EDUC 6839 or EDUC 6939.
2 During the semester in which EDUC 6839 or EDUC 6939 is completed and three weeks prior to final examination week, students pursuing the MS in Curriculum and Instruction will complete a formal thesis or project presentation to the TCED Thesis/Project Committee.
