About the UHCL Geography Program

Since its founding in 2001, the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Geography Program has evolved into a dynamic program specializing in human/cultural geography. The program has developed courses that reflect the faculty’s interests in cultural geography, urban geography, historical geography, international development, geographic education, and historical geography, as well as regional studies. In support of these courses, we have developed a program of study in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). We also recognize the centrality of experiential learning in geography and toward this end have implemented field-based components of our degree plans.

Upon graduation, all UHCL Geography Majors will be able to:

  • Articulate the discipline’s historical and philosophical origins,
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic cartographic conventions,
  • Interpret geographical phenomenon from both regional and systematic perspectives,
  • Conduct basic geographic fieldwork, especially with regard to metropolitan Houston,
  • Apply geographic methodologies and theories in order to interpret landscapes,
  • Think critically about a broad range of geographic topics,
  • Demonstrate geographic understanding and analysis in written communication,
  • Demonstrate geographic understanding and analysis through oral communication,
  • Demonstrate geographic understanding and analysis through a variety of technologies and media, and
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic statistical methodologies.
