This is an exciting time for the Instructional Technology program. We have just launched our revised “Online Distance Educator Professional Development Certificate” program. The program now consists of three courses, Interactive Distance Learning, Technology and eLearning, and Instructional Web Design and Development. These courses have been redesigned and updated to enable our certificate students to enter distance education positions able to function well on the day that they start their first job. Depending on the semester, each course is offered in both the 15-week format and the eight-week format, with all courses being offered both online and face-to-face. What makes our distance education certificate unique is that we go beyond history and theory and require that our students |

learn how to create a distance education course, hands-on, using Moodle, the open source course management system favored by many school districts as well as universities. In addition, all courses taken as part of the UHCL distance education certificate can be applied to the Instructional Technology master’s degree. In an interesting development, it seems that our eight-week courses are now somewhat more popular than their 15-week versions. Time will tell if this trend holds.Read more...

Chris Duke, Director of Training and Professional Development at San Jacinto College
Chris Duke received his master's degree in instructional technology from UHCL in 2001. Chris noted, "My degree from UHCL played a critical role in the development of my career; I was able to build upon my classroom experience, enhance my understanding of the teaching and learning process and diversify my skill set."
After graduating from UHCL, Chris enrolled in the educational psychology doctoral program at Texas A&M University. With a focus on learning and technology, Chris is currently working on his dissertation, which will examine the computer literacy skills of college students. He recently stated that, "when I started the program at UHCL, I hadn't really considered pursuing a doctorate, but after the education and encouragement I received from UHCL professors, it seemed like a natural next step, and it's definitely been worth it."
Currently, Chris is the director of training and professional development at San Jacinto College. His work group designs, develops and delivers training focused on the college's administrative and office systems. Chris also works with instructional designers and faculty to explore and integrate emerging instructional technologies into classrooms. Chris resides in northwest Houston with his wife and two daughters.Read more ...

Application Requirements for Students
Beginning with the spring 2009 term, students applying for admission to a graduate program will have to submit several documents without which they will not be admitted. If the student takes courses without admission to the Instructional Technology program, he or she forfeits any graduate financial aid for that semester, none of the courses in which a student enrolls can be recorded as part of the student’s graduate program, and he/she will have to re-apply for graduate admission. Documents include ALL transcripts, the application form and fee, the GRE scores, and any other required documents for the application. While a student may take a class without admission and a complete admissions application, in order to have the courses count toward a graduate program, receive loan money, and avoid a second application, all required documents will have to be filed by the 12th class day (for spring 2009, that is Feb. 2). This is not a UHCL policy, but a new State of Texas rule.
