Procedure for Substituting Transfer courses

Two of your graduate classes might be considered for substitution but you would have to take other courses in their place to complete the number of required courses. Transferring courses into a program is a decision by a review committee after being admitted to the program and after you are assigned an INST advisor. The advisor then decides if the courses may be submitted for review although there is no guaranty they will be accepted.

Answer the following questions to determine if you meet the requirements for a course substitution appeal.

  • Have you taken a course almost identical to one offered in an INST program or certificate? To answer this question, read the course descriptions for the UHCL-INST program to determine which ones are almost identical to the course you intend to transfer in the UHCL catalog. (This is the student's responsibility)
  • Will the transfer course be less than 5 years old when you RECEIVE your certificate or degree from UHCL INST program? If not, the course is not transferable.
  • Did you earn a B- or better in the transfer course? If not, the course is not transferable.

Then after answering the questions above with a yes, then -

Prepare an appeal package for the SoE Associate Dean with:

  1. The catalog description from the official catalog for the same years in which you completed the potential transfer course. Copy the page and circle the potential transfer course.
  2. Your transcript with the grade with the potential transfer course circled.
  3. If available, the syllabus from the potential transfer course that you completed.
  4. A cover letter specifying the course to replace and the potential transfer and the year and grade the transfer was completed; a list of the documents provided (transcript, syllabus, catalog description).
