Master of Science in Reading

This program is designed to prepare teachers for leadership in reading instruction at the elementary, secondary and community college levels.

This is a 36-37 hour carefully sequenced study that begins with an education core and practical coursework in reading and language arts with a balance of classroom and clinical applications. Particular areas of study will focus on research design and analysis, statistics and measurement, models of language, developing reading programs, modern trends and survey of children’s literature, and critical reading and thinking. With the diverse cultural backgrounds of children in school today, our reading program stresses the importance of promoting multiculturalism within education and of developing inquiring and reflective minds through the discovery of literature.

With the Master of Science in Reading, students may choose to follow one of three routes:

  • Master of Science in Reading
  • Master of Science in Reading with Reading Specialist Standard Early Childhood – Grade 12 (EC-12) Certification
  • Reading Specialist Standard EC-12 Certificate

Graduates with this degree may pursue careers as master classroom teachers, public school reading specialists, reading or language arts coordinators, reading clinicians, remedial reading instructors at the community college or as adult literacy trainers.
