School Library and Information Science



School librarians create a vibrant culture of literacy by teaching critical skills young people need to evaluate and manage information while using innovative technology to share ideas. These dynamic educators build on the traditional role of nurturing a love for reading, while developing high-quality collections to support the school curriculum and meet student reading preferences.

Program Overview

University of Houston-Clear Lake's Master of Science in School Library and Information Science focuses on school librarianship. Nationally-recognized, award-winning school library faculty teach both face-to-face and online courses. Accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the program is designed for those with a passion for leading elementary-, middle- or high-school teachers in the integration of technology; collaborating with teachers to develop lessons in all curricular areas; helping students become information-literate; teaching students about the ethical use of resources; and implementing and promoting school-wide literacy programs, all of which impact student learning.

UH-Clear Lake's Master of Science in School Library and Information Science equips students with the theories and practices of library and information science through a comprehensive study of the foundations, principles and ideas of the discipline, including those related tmanagement, selection of children's and young adult literature, information organization, technology and electronic media.

Admission Requirements

Bachelor's degree (or higher) and a 3.000 GPA in last 60 hours.
  • If GPA in last 60 hours is 3.000 or higher, the
    Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller
    Analogies Test (MAT) is NOT required.
  • If GPA is 2.750-3.000, minimum required test scores :
    GRE - 294 combined on the Quantitative & Verbal
    (900 if taken prior tAugust 2011), 3.5 Analytical
    MAT - 390
Hold a valid Texas teaching certificate
Provide a letter of support from a school building administrator.


  • Pre-admission and pre-registration advising are
    available through the Office of Academic Advising.
  • Upon approval of admission ta program, each
    student will be assigned a faculty adviser.
  • For program details and tdevelop a degree plan,
    students should schedule an appointment with their
    assigned faculty adviser.

Professional Librarian Certification Requirements

Students completing the Master of Science in School Library and Information Science are eligible for certification as school librarians. Students seeking this certification must meet the following requirements:
  • Hold a valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Two years successful, full-time, approved teaching
  • Passing score on school librarian state assessment
