School Library and Information Science

School librarians create a vibrant culture of literacy by teaching critical skills young people need to evaluate and manage information while using innovative technology to share ideas. These dynamic educators build on the traditional role of nurturing a love for reading, while developing high-quality collections to support the school curriculum and meet student-reading preferences.

Our Library Science Program focuses on school librarianship. Nationally-recognized, award-winning school library faculty teach both face-to-face and online courses. Accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the program is designed for those with a passion for leading elementary-, middle-
or high-school teachers in the integration of technology; collaborating with teachers to develop lessons in all curricular areas; helping students become information-literate; teaching students about the ethical use of resources; and implementing and promoting school-wide literacy programs, all of which impact student learning.

We offer the follow degree:

Master of Science in School Library and Information Science with School Librarian Standard Certification (EC-12) – this degree prepares the candidate to analyze and identify the needs of diverse communities of users; to assist and educate users to resources; to develop and manage collections of information resources; to deploy information technologies in effective and innovative ways, and to effectively evaluate and use research.

Our program equips students with the theories and practices of library and information science through a comprehensive study of the foundations, principles and ideas of the discipline, including those related to management, selection of children's and young adult literature, information organization, technology and electronic media. We utilize the latest advances in technology and information literacy to prepare students to collaborate with teachers, manage multimedia collections and maintain a successful library. Graduates of this program can assume many roles including school librarian, library information specialist, technology coordinator, technology specialist, or instructional consultant.
