What is SHOSTS?

Students Helping Other Students to Succeed

SHOSTS Peer Mentoring Program is designed to ensure all students gain success in enhancing their academic experience by attaining a skilled student mentor.

Our mission is designed for students who wish to

  • Find guidance, support, and advice
  • Develop interpersonal and communication skills
  • Become more involved in activities and campus life

This program aims to encourage confidence-building techniques, help develop life management skills, problem-solving, achieve higher academic skill, learn about different people and cultures, and create a sense of community at the college and surrounding city. The main goal is to help Mentees make a positive and successful transition to UHCL.

We welcome all UHCL students! This is a free service offered to you by the Student Success Center.

We pair you with a skilled student mentor, who has attended UHCL for at least 2 semesters, to help provide you with a positive and smooth transition into UHCL and enhance your academic experience.  Through a peer mentor’s support, you can obtain campus guidance, general academic advice on your major or degree program, gain confidence in communicating with professors, and become more involved in campus life.  This is the place where you can learn from someone who has been “in your shoes” not very long ago and understands your needs as a fellow student. Plus, you can meet new friends and participate in exciting community service projects and events on campus!

Requirements of a Mentee:

  • Have a positive attitude and be willing to work as a team player
  • Maintain weekly contact with your peer mentor throughout the semester

Make a positive change in another student’s life!

A mentor can provide sincerity and courage by creating an environment of belonging. We need mentors to inform and give guidance about college life and resources on campus. While providing social support to their mentee throughout the semester and becoming more involved on campus, mentors have the opportunity to earn graduation cords, volunteer hours, and add to their resume.

Requirements of a Mentor:

  • Undergraduate GPA: 2.5 or higher or
    Graduate GPA: 3.0 or higher
  • Attended UHCL for 2 or more semesters
  • Commit at least one hour a week to your mentee
  • Attend a mandatory training
