Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction is an intense level of academic support that, like tutoring, is based in skill development and guided practice. However, supplemental instruction is designed to deliver academic support to students in a specific course by embedding a tutor, or Supplemental Instructor, in the class.

Supplemental Instructors (SI) are required to attend the class for which they are offering academic support. This will help build familiarity with the particular skills the faculty member is emphasizing and how the subject matter is being used to engage and develop these skills. The SI will offer two to three sessions a week for students needing help in developing these skills. The Supplemental Instructors are chosen through close collaboration with faculty.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  1. More effectively engage the course material through increased exposure and regular review of the specific course's fundamental learning skills
  2. Through regular guided practice, develop increased confidence in applying subject skills to course assessments and other assignments
  3. Become more responsible and mature learners and develop the skills necessary to engage the supplemental instructor and faculty in dialog conducive to solving academic issues
  4. Increase their capacity to work in groups as well as their ability to lead discussions amongst their peers given course subjects, session exercises, or structure review with the supplemental instructors
  5. Expand their knowledge of the course's larger academic field, possible career paths, and opportunities for advanced study
