Strategic Goals
FY01 - FY06

Continue to improve and expand student services for UHCL’s increasing diverse, non-traditional learners. (Recruitment and Retention)

  • Increase physical space for student services departments to expand services.
  • Develop services for off-site students involved in distance education.
  • Improve web pages.
  • Explore childcare options and provide best option for UHCL students and staff.
  • Continue to assess hours of service and possibilities of 24/7 options.
  • Develop mentoring and cultural awareness programs to enhance diversity.
  • Increase cooperative education and jobs on campus for international students and other diverse learners.
  • Increase staff and resources as needed to meet growing demands for services.
  • Increase collaboration with other offices to enhance services for students.

Continue to create and implement strategies to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse, competent student services staff. (Staff Development)

  • Develop resources and networks to reach diverse professionals.
  • Support staff by providing professional memberships, journals etc. as budgets permit.
  • Continue to provide a supportive, challenging environment for staff.
  • Continue to support increased educational development for staff and explore possibilities for tuition reimbursement.
  • Offer opportunities for promotion and job enrichment for staff.
  • Continue to provide continuous feedback of expectations, performance etc. through formal performance reviews and informal discussions.
  • Continue to provide staff development opportunities and explore possibilities of C.E.U.’s.
  • Provide alternative ways to reward staff through travel, flex time, etc.

Improve existing facilities and acquire new space to enable each department to accomplish its mission. (Resource Management)

  • Continue to improve spaces within student services departments in the Bayou Building.
  • Increase storage space in the Bayou Building and in the new building.
  • Redesign the new building by considering future needs of students, the mission of each department, and the relationship of student services to other departments on campus.
  • Develop and implement plan in collaboration with Administration and Finance to continuously improve the Bayou
  • Theatre and recreational spaces on campus such as tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer field.

Increase collaboration and develop partnerships with faculty, other staff, other educational institutions, and the community. (Process Improvement)

  • Collaborate with faculty on programming, assessment and publications.
  • Provide training sites for graduate students in college student personnel programs.
  • Increase participation in multi-institutional projects such as the Job Fair, Celebrating our Elders etc.
  • Participate with enrollment services in recruiting at schools, corporations etc.
  • Seek dedicated space in the Delta and Arbor buildings for student service marketing and delivery of service.
  • Encourage staff to also work out of their office by visiting faculty and staff and establishing alternative sites in the atrium, Delta, or Arbor buildings.
  • Seek alternative venues for programming such as UFA, Delta, or Arbor buildings.
  • Provide time and resources for staff to invest in collaboration.
  • Increase staff and budgets as needed if collaboration results in increased demand for services.

Increase development and use of data-based assessment and planning. (Effectiveness)

  • Increase the assessment coordinator position to full-time.
  • Develop a concise, consistent system for gathering data.
  • Provide comprehensive, on-going staff development in assessment.
  • Create a division-wide calendar for assessment.
  • Conduct division-wide assessment such as a Quality of Life study.
  • Conduct periodic meetings to share assessment results.
  • Develop a method to gather enrollment data and other relevant data from the community colleges.
  • Develop system to use data gathered by other departments.

Expand the use of information technology to enhance services. (Effectiveness)

  • Use technology to provide services at remote sites.
  • Expand use of internet.
  • Improve web pages to provide interactive dimension.
  • Increase resources for technology.
  • Provide more technology support staff specifically for student services.
  • Increase training for staff in technology.
  • Use technology to enhance marketing of services.
  • Continue to upgrade technology in each office and explore possibility of laptops.
  • Provide computers for student use within student service departments.
