Faculty Guide: Hearing Impairment

Accommodations

Interpreting
A sign language interpreter often translates the lecture to a hearing impaired student. There is a time lag between the spoken word and the translation of the lecture. The student's contribution to the lecture or discussion may be slightly delayed.

Note Taking
The professor may give a copy of lecture notes to the student and/or Disability Services can arrange for a classmate to be a notetaker. A copy machine and NCR carbonless paper are available for notetaking in the Disability Services office.

Exams
It is often helpful if an interpreter reads and translates the questions to the student in sign language.

Listening Devices
A listening device used to amplify the voice of the instructor is also available through Disability Services.
