Faculty Guide: Visual Impairment
Accommodations
- If possible, decide which textbooks you will use at least two months before the semester begins. It allows for the student to order and receive taped textbooks.
- Please provide handouts of information that is visually disaplayed (i.e. chalkboard, powerpoint, overheads).
- Large font size is preferred for class handouts/exams for partially sighted students.
- Blind students may need readers to adminster exams and record responses.
Other accommodation items include:
- Braille or large print books
- Readers
- Tape recorded texts and lectures
- Raised line drawings of diagrams, charts, and illustrations
- Talking calculators
- Braille computer terminals
- Reading machines
- Close circuit TV magnifier or other magnifying device
These items can be helpful to visually impaired students depending on their level of sightedness.
