Faculty Guide: Visual Impairment
Communication
- Identify yourself when you approach a person who is blind. If a new person approaches, be sure to introduce them.
- Lightly touch the person's arm when you speak so that they know you are speaking to them.
- Face the person when speaking and use a normal tone of voice.
- Be specific when offering directions, and point out obstacles in the path of travel. Use clock cues whenever possible
Example: The door is at 2 o'clock.
- Never pet or distract a guide dog without the owners permission.
