UHCL Veterans Day History

UHCL Veterans DayJim Benson, associate professor of Legal Studies at UHCL, and Esther Anderson, an alumna of UHCL and 2003 president of the UHCL Alumni Association, suggested and supported the idea of hosting a Veterans Day Celebration at UHCL. As business partners, they utilized their combined staff and resources to work with the staff of the Office of Alumni and Community Relations to collaboratively create the first celebration in 2003. The event involved a number of university representatives among the many presenters in what was a multi-hour program of activities, culminating with hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks served in the campus circular drive in front of the Bayou Building. As preparations were being made for that first event, they inquired about having a permanent location on campus to host the event and to honor veterans. Working with the associate vice president for university advancement, the concept and philosophy of Liberty Park was developed, approved and created.

From that time forward, Veterans Day has been celebrated with our surrounding community on November 11th of each year in Liberty Park.

A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to and including my life."
