Hazlewood Information

Hazlewood Waiver

If you have exhausted all your G.I. Bill benefits, you may still qualify for Texas Hazlewood benefits.

  • Veteran students new to the Hazlewood Program need to complete a Hazlewood Application. You also need to submit a copy of your DD214 and a letter from the VA Education Center stating your VA benefits have been exhausted. (Please see the application for more information on these requirements.)
  • In some cases, Children and Spouses of Veterans may be eligible for the Hazlewood Waiver. New students qualifying for the dependent waiver should complete the Application for Eligible Children and Spouses. You also need to submit a copy of the DD214 and a letter from the (dependents don't have DD214) VA Education Center stating your VA benefits have been exhausted. (Please see the application for more information on these requirements.)
  • Each semester, previous recipients should complete another Hazlewood Application. Each semester, eligible children and spouses should also complete Application for Eligible Children and Spouses.

Hazlewood Exemption-Legacy Act

The Legacy Act allows veterans eligible for the Hazlewood Act to transfer unused Hazlewood hours to an eligible child. Eligible children are:

  • The stepchild, biological, adopted child, or claimed a dependant of the veteran
  • Claimed as a dependent on the veteran's federal income tax return
  • A resident of Texas
  • Maintaining satisfactory progress
  • 25 years of age or younger, unless the child provides documentation from a physician indicating he or she suffered from a severe illness or other debilitating condition which prevented the child from using the exemption before the age of 25.

To apply for the Legacy Act, the veteran and child should submit the following documents to the Office of Student Financial Aid:

  • The veteran must complete the Hazlewood Application. The veteran also needs to submit a copy of his or her DD214 (member 4 copy) and a letter from the VA Education Center stating that VA benefits have been exhausted. (Please see the application for more information on these requirements.)
  • The veteran must submit a signed copy of the most recent tax return showing the student (child of veteran) was claimed as a dependent or a copy of the child's birth certificate.
  • The student (child of veteran) must complete the Student Form
  • Each semester, the student (child of veteran) must complete the Application for Children and Spouses.
