Chicago, CMS, and Turabian Styles

All college level students will need to use documentation at some point. There are several types of styles that one can use to document with. This handout will briefly describe the Turabian Style of documentation, how and when to document, along with sources students can use to find information on Turabian Style.

  • Turabian Style (Named for Kate L. Turabian) is most often used in philosophy, history, religious studies, and fine arts classes.
  • A Manual for Writers: of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations by Kate L. Turabian can be found in most university libraries, some public libraries, or purchased through a book service.

Encyclopedia Article:

Well-known reference books used as sources are not included in the Reference List but are cited in parentheses within the text.

Example: (Jon Smith, "Turabian Writing," in Encyclopedia America, 1999 ed.)

In Text Citing:

Turabian style incorporates footnoting within the textual paragraphs.
