Engineering Management

The Engineering Management program includes a master's degree that combines the problem-solving elements of engineering with the leadership strategies of business. The broad engineering management curriculum was designed to prepare students with technical backgrounds to become industry leaders. Integrating courses from UHCL's College of Science and Engineering and the College of Business, the program focuses on multiple disciplines. These include business management/administration, project management, systems engineering, and industrial engineering, among others.

UHCL's Engineering Management program gives you the flexibility that other colleges don't. You can take courses in person at UHCL and at UHCL at Pearland, or you can take some online. You can also earn the entire degree online. With the convenient flexibility of the program, you can earn an advanced degree in two years while maintaining full-time employment.

Graduate Degrees

Engineering Management M.S.

The Engineering Management M.S. consists of 33 graduate credit hours, including the option of a capstone experience or a thesis. With the capstone option, you must complete 15 hours of core requirement, 15 hours of electives, and three hours of capstone. If you choose the thesis option, you must complete 15 hours of core requirements, 12 hours of electives, and six hours of thesis.

Engineering Management M.S. Online

The Engineering Management M.S. Online is the alternative to the face-to-face degree and features the same rigorous coursework and academic standards, with highly qualified faculty members. All online courses are offered in an asynchronous delivery mode using modern online course management techniques. The online option also consists of 33 graduate credit hours (15 hours of core courses, 15 hours of elective courses, and three hours of capstone courses). A thesis option is not available.

The following four certificates are available to EMGT M.S. students at no additional cost:

Certificate Application Process

The certificate application process is based on the Catalog (see General Requirements - Applying for a Certificate):

Students must officially apply through their E-Service account for the award of certificate completion the semester in which they plan to earn the certificate.
During their last semester of enrollment, students must complete an application for the award of certificate completion by the stated deadline, as specified in the academic calendar. Please refer to the academic calendar for online graduation application dates and deadlines.
If students do not successfully complete their certificate requirements at the close of the semester for which they have applied, they will be required to reapply and pay another fee during the subsequent semester in which they intend to complete.
Awards of the certificate will be posted to the official college transcript.

Therefore, in order to apply for a certificate, please:

Log-in to your E-Services
Select the "Apply for Graduation" tab
Select the certificate plan
Pay the $25 Certificate fee (as per the Catalog; see "Special Fees")

Students will complete the above steps for all EMGT certificates.

Students will be able to see the certificate in their transcripts once the university completes the process. There will be no additional certificate sent to the students, except for the SAP Certificate. After the SAP Certificate is added to their transcript, students need to contact Dr. Gene Shan only if they want to receive a copy of the SAP Student Recognition Award from SAP.

Project Management Certificate

The Project Management Certificate is a graduate certificate intended for non-degree-seeking students and can complement virtually any engineering, science and technical field.

About Admissions

The EMGT program offers a holistic review process, in which, applications are reviewed based upon academic degree, work experience, GPA, and GRE if submitted.

Application

Apply online through the UHCL Graduate Application Portal.
Requirements
Bachelor Degree:
- Science, engineering, or other disciplines related to Engineering Management.
- If applicants have a bachelor's degree from other disciplines, then, at least one year of work experience in a technical field is required.
GPA:
- Recommended minimum of GPA of 3.0 on the last 60 credits.
GRE/GMAT:
- GRE of 290 with verbal 140 and 145 quantitative Or GMAT of 500 with minimum quantitative score of 35.
- GRE/GMAT is waived if one of the following conditions is met.
  - Applicants with a GPA 3.0 or above.
  - Applicants with at least one year of post-graduate full-time work experience in a technical field.
Foundation Courses: Calculus I and Probability and Statistics

Supporting Documents:
- Resume summarizing applicants' career objectives and professional experience.
- Two letters of reference from academic advisors or supervisors at work who can verify applicant's employment history.
- These are required documents and must be submitted for your application to be processed. Documents should be uploaded to your student portal under To-Do or Checklist Items.

Completion of a minimum of at least 33 semester hours from an approved list of courses
No undergraduate level credits will be allowed for the EMGT master's degree
